Meet our campers. They come from all around Nunavik: Kangiqsuallujuaq. Kuujjuaq, Aupaluk, Quartaq, Salluit, Akulivik, Ivujivik, Puvirnituk, Inukjuaq, and Kuujjuarapik. They are here to spend a week of immersion in science and by their liveliness, their smiles, and their enthusiasm we know they are having a great time.

It takes quite a few people to assure that Science Camp runs smoothly: Science animators, senior and junior counsellors, residence moms, cooks, a recreation animator, and a camp leader. Meet the team!

Pegasus

Pegasus is an aeronautical engineer from Montreal who took his holiday time to animate some of our workshops. It's a first science camp for him and he is quite enthused and enjoying working with the youth of Nunavik. His favourite pastime: looking for the parachutes lost when launching rockets! He can't sleep without his 3 bowls of Special K before going to bed!

Phoenix

Phoenix, our robotics specialist from Edmonton, is a Master's student in computer engineering. She was really looking forward to her second science camp in Inukjuak and to working with the youth of Nunavik again. This year Phoenix discovered that in Nunavik it can be quite complicated to get missing material in time for a workshop, but she was able to adapt to the situation in no time. Surely everyone was impressed by Pyxis Jr., her pet robot!

Pyxis

For over seven years, Pyxis, a student at the University of Ottawa, has been animating science camps. She so enjoyed last year's science camp in Inukjuak that she decided to come back…she has no regrets. Pyxis is our camp detective - After last year's forensics workshop and this year's "Fakes And Forgeries" Nunavik might soon have a NBI (Nunavik Bureau of Investigation!)

Vela

Her smile is catchy! Vela works in Ottawa at organizing camps, festivals, and other special events. This is her first time animating science activities at a science camp and all that she has heard about it is true…it's great fun! Our camp magician…everyone was impressed with her ability to check a person's pulse using two toothpicks!!

Lupus

Lupus, from Quebec City, has been teaching in Akulivik for the last 2 years. His interest in Science is what brought him here. He is helping the animators out during their workshops and learning all about science camp life. What would we do without Lupus and his dishwashing skills!!! And after all the dishes are done, out come the origami papers. He is a master at that too!

Orion

Orion has been teaching Math and Science in Puvurnituk and decided to bring closure to this experience by helping out at Science Camp. He was also quite excited by the idea of returning to Inukjuak where he was a teacher for two years. Orion was a great helping hand to the animators. He also kept the dishes people busy by putting each food item on a separate plate!

Centaurus

Born and bred in Montreal, Centaurus has been working as an IPL counsellor at the Kativik School Board for several years. You've surely seen him around as he has been travelling from school to school several times a year. At this, his first science camp, he is helping the animators, learning, having fun, and giving Draco a hard time. He is quite the team player, but you don't want him as your partner in a card game - he's clueless!

Perseus

Perseus, an IPL teacher in Inukjuak is moving on to Quartaq. Perseus has seven years of experience as a camp animator, but this is his first science camp. This will be his "farewell" to Inukjuak. He assisted the animators in their workshops and his enthusiasm helped get things going. He impressed everyone with kite-flying talents and his fine cooking.

Hercules

The JEDI master!!! Hercules, a math and science counsellor for the Kativik School Board working out of Kuujjuarapik is leading the camp this year for the first time. His goal is to make this science camp a fun learning experience and to show the campers that science is interesting. Camp life is not new to him even if this is his first Science Camp in Nunavik. A finer dressed leader we have never had…Prada shoes no less, but everyone will have to agree that he and his comb were not on good terms!!

Aquarius

From IPL teacher and Principal in Kuujjuaraapik, to bus driver and web-page master at science camp… that's our Aquarius. He brings to the camp his experience as an animator at a science and technology camp in his native New Brunswick. He's been a good team player, working hard at beating Hercules and Perseus at cards, but unfortunately he's had Centaurus as a partner too often… He takes it all with a laugh anyway!

Draco

Draco, a long time ESL counsellor at Kativik, came to us directly from Dorval. This is her third science camp and once again she is thoroughly enjoying the experience of seeing the "kids" involved and happy doing science. During this camp, she has kept busy making sure everyone got here on time, finding missing cargo through her good contacts with Air Inuit, taking pictures, and making sure the dishes get done!

Volans

Volans was our "chef" for the week. He kept around 35 campers and animators well fed all week and made sure that we all returned with extra calories. His cinnamon donuts went like hot cakes. Thanks for everything, Volans. avail.

Taurus

Taurus was assistant cook. He greeted each camper with a smile and a "Bon Appetit". He might have appeared a bit nervous, but all with a good reason: he's going to be a dad for the first time any day now!

Andromeda

Andromeda, a junior counsellor, moved to Kuujjuaq a few months ago, so returning to Inukjuak and to science camp (his second) was quite exciting for him. He takes his job seriously. He helped Draco with pictures and making sure that everyone performed their kitchen duties with a smile. His claim to fame…BUUURRPPPPP!!!!!

Eridanus

Eridanus just graduated from Secondary 5 in Akulivik. She is back as a junior counsellor for the second year. She has impressed everyone with her drawing abilities. Perhaps one day her cartoons will be published in Nunatsiaq News. She is quite the talented reporter too. Who knows, she might also one day report on our science camp for APTN!!!

Tutturuit

Tutturuit, our "house mother" from POV is back with us after having taken a break last year. She is a part time interpreter at the Inulitsivik hospital. This is her third science camp. Her day starts at seven when she starts getting everone up in time for showers, breakfast and camp activities; it ends at 11:00 PM when she does her rounds to make use all the lights are out! She gets lots of exercise running up and down stairs with her master key….

Arjuk

Arjuk, from Salluit, Dorval, and soon Kuujjuaq, is the only counsellor to have attended all the Kativik Science Camps. This is her fourth! Arjuk, who works as a counsellor for culture teachers, likes science camp and the opportunity to be with the youth of Nunavik. Will the blanket for her "ingutak to be" finished by the end of camp?!

Scorpius

Scorpius from Kuujjuaraapik was so delighted by the first camp that he stayed on for the second. He has been a good addendum to the team of junior counsellors, bringing in his expertise from the first camp. Scorpius has a catchy smile and is always around to give a helping hand. The ideal son!

Nanujuaq

Nanujuaq from POV was our recreation animator. Just having completed a program with "Le Cirque du Monde" he has shared with everyone his talents as juggler, acrobat, gymnast, clown… This is his first camp and he hopes to be back. Every morning he gets everyone exercising for 15 minutes before the activities begin. A good way to make sure everyone is well awake!
