The Environment Stream

The students chose from a list of four "streams" in which to do a concentration during their week at science camp. One of these streams was the environment stream.

Within this stream were a number of workshops designed to expose the students to a number of factors which affect our fragile environment. The campers learned about several different ecosystems and their particularities. Each student then built their own ecosystem based on what they learned in the stream.

A number of the workshops were done outside. One of these was to sample water from the lake which supplies the potable water to the town. The students then carried out water quality tests on the samples.

The students were shown how cities clean their drinking water. Afterwards, they cleared dirty (muddy) water from the community using their new found tecniques. An oil spill was simulated and their knowledge was also put to good use in trying to clean it up. A groundwater model was constructed to show the effects of pollution on the environment.

Below are some pictures taken while one of the groups was taking the workshop.
