Camp 2000 Staff

Science camp
2000 would not be possible without the energy, enthusiasm, and effort
exerted by the camp staff.
All of the
staff members adopted names of rivers during the science camp. One of
the challenges put to the students was to find the real names of the staff
members during their week in camp. Due to multiple blunders on the part
of the staff, several students succeeded in finding out all of the names.

Activity
Animators
The
staff are divided up into zzz groups. Activity Animators were responsible
for leading the activities and workshops during the week.
|
|
Congo.
Student from Queen's University in Kingson. Congo animated the animation,
flying machines and structures activities. Also contributed to noise
mayhem at meal times by teaching the campers the announcements song. |
|
Nahanni.
Student from the Universiy of Guelph. Nahanni walked the students
through animation, structures, and lego workshops. Nahanni also
contributed to camp spirit and frustration with her never=can=tell
games. |
Metabetchewan.
Student from l'UQAC. Metabetchewan's main responsibilities were
to lead the environment and boat building activities.

Madawaska.
Student from the University of Waterloo. Madawaska lead the students
through the avalanche, environment, and lego workshops.
|
|
|
St
Louis. A professional videographer from Montreal, St. Louis
showed the campers how to use digital video and still cameras
and led a stream on the use of computers in video making. St Louis
was very popular among the campers with his equipment loan station.

|
|
Junior
Counsellors
Junior
counsellors were added to the staff this year in an effort to give them
some leadership skills and to act as a liason between the students and
the activity animators. Both junior counsellors for this year's edition
of the camp are participants from previous camps.

Red
is a student from Inukjuak. Red compensated for the nasty weather
we had with his wide, bright smile. He never stopped smiling all
week long.

|
Kuujjuaraaluk
is a student from Montreal. He entertained the troops with his guitar.
With Red he was also instrumental in running the video equipment.

|
Invited
Guests
Three
guests from out of town were invited to the camp this year to show the
students some different technologies. The technical director of the
Nunavik Mineral Exploration Fund was on hand to give a presentation
and then a hands-on demonstration of mineraal prospecting methods. Two
members from Canada's armed forces were also on hand to show the campers
the apparatus behind satellite communications.

Amazon.
Sergeant with the Canadian armed forces. Amazon helped pass on information
about satellite communications to the students.
|
|
Danube.
Communication specialist with the Canadian armed forces. Along with
Amazon, he carried out the demonstration of the satellite telephones
that the Canadian Military currently uses while in the field.

|
|
Saguenay.
The big man from Kuujjuaq was on hand to show how to look for minerals
in a stream bed using both the panning and sluice box tecniques.
He also gave the students a geological history of the Nunavik region
and gave a little lesson in the theory behind VLF and Beep Mapping.

|
Inuit
Counsellors
Two
veterans from the science camp held last year returned to help out again
this year. Their experience and knowledge were invaluable resources.
|
Kuujjuaq.
A long time resident of Salluit but currently working for KSB in
Montreal, Kuujjuaq served as our Inuit camp counsellor. Kuujjuaq
was always available to the students when-ever they needed an ear
to talk to or a shoulder to lean on.

|
Kuuvik.
Originally from Puvirnituq, but now working in Montreal, Kuuvik
was in charge of maintaining order in the student residences and
was always available to the students in times of need. Kuuvik also
prepared the bannock for the days spent out on the tundra.

|
|
|
Kangiqsualujjuaq.
The local physical education teacher planned and animated all
of the recreational activities for the campers. His abilities
in origami was of great interest to the campers.

|
Interested
KSB Staff
This
year, a number of teachers were approached and asked if they would be
interested in attending science camp as active observers during the workshops.
It is anticipated that these teachers will be able to learn some new activities
that they will then bring back to their classrooms to use with their students.
In this manner, the science camp will be able to exert a positive influence
on students who were not present at the science camp. The KSB pedagogical
consultant for the English primary level also attended the camp to pick
up some pointers to share with the teachers she works with throughout
the year.

Nastapoka.
A long time employee of the KSB, Nastapoka has taught in both Inukjuak
and, more recently in Kuujjuaq. His tireless help in the kitchen
rendered the task of the chief cook and bottle washer much more
palatable.
|
|
Mississippi
served as our minister in charge of the housing and transportation
portfolios. Mississippi ensured that everyone was on their best
behaviour and dotted all of their i's and crossed their t's.

|
|
St.
Lawrence. Long legs is a local primary teacher who joined the
camp when she was forced to vacate her classroom to make room for
the workshops. She led some of the activity animators into the mud
after regaling them with stories of big fish at low tide. St. Lawrence
was also instrumental in the choosing of pictures that are posted
on these web pages.

Dirst
& Durst
These
two characters set the wheels in motion for Science Camp 2000 to happen
on Nunavik Soil. Once the ball was given a push, it was kept rolling
by all those pictured above. Without their commitment and dedication,
none of this could have happened.

Nile.
The driving force behind Science Camp 2000. Nile also served as
the chief cook and bottle washer and kept track of where all the
money was going. Nile managed to navigate through all the turbulence
to get all of our campers to Kangiqsualujjuaq.

Volga.
The guy who kept an eye on the general running of the camp. Responsible
for running around and getting broken things working again. Builder
of the science camp section of the website.
